CARTER FAMILY FOLD

The Fold, located in Hiltons, Va., is the homestead of The Carter Family, country music legends, who got their start right here in Bristol with the 1927 Bristol Sessions.  This is the kind of place where you can go to enjoy good, old-fashioned, foot-stomping bluegrass every Saturday night, as well as during the Carter Family Memorial Music Festival the first weekend in August.

VIRGINIA'S HERITAGE MUSIC TRAIL: THE CROOKED ROAD

This 250-mile driving trail winds through the Southwest Virginia countryside and features Bristol as one of the seven major music hubs along the way. The trail includes some of the most significant sites in the history of American country music and each venue gives visitors a chance to enjoy the sounds of the area including Bristol TN/VA, the Birthplace of Country Music.

Heartwood is the gateway to Southwest Virginia’s rich culture and creative economy. Here you can see the work of regional artisans and musicians and find out about Southwest Virginia’s history, heritage, outdoor recreation and scenic beauty via stories and first-person narratives.

ETSU BLUEGRASS, OLD TIME, AND COUNTRY MUSIC

Founded 30 years ago in 1982 by Jack Tottle, Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Studies at East Tennessee State University is the oldest established program of its kind at any four-year institution. This unique program has thrived on the philosophies of preserving the musical traditions rooted in Appalachian culture while at the same time encouraging creativity and development of prevailing styles. Students from around the globe come to ETSU exclusively to study the music of the mountains in the rich cultural hearth of Northeast Tennessee.
