A recent competition organized by Discover Bristol uncovered some extraordinary area talent and offered the city of Bristol a whole lot of love. Funded by Virginia Tourism Corporation’s Crush Friday grant program, the contest encouraged hardworking millennials to take off Friday and enjoy long weekends throughout Virginia. Participants were tasked with creating a video highlighting why they love Bristol, with the chance to win $1,000. While the city is a pretty easy place to love with a plethora of quaint shops, friendly residents and made from scratch foods, each participant utilized their individual creativity to focus in on the aspects of Bristol that they favor most.
Directed by Johnny Hayes, Video 4 entitled “Crush Friday” is dedicated to highlighting some of the best ways to get out and fall in love with Bristol. The creativity utilized by Hayes attracted the attention of voters and helped earn him the contest’s grand prize of $1,000. When asked what winning meant to him Johnny stated, “Winning this contest… [affirmed] that with hard work and some good friends by my side, I can do anything I put my mind to.” The director first developed a personal zeal for Bristol during his childhood when he would spend weekends at the home of his grandparents who are Bristol residents. The decision to enter the contest was easy for Hayes as he has enjoyed every opportunity to develop his digital marketing skills since his recent graduation from East Tennessee State University. The director’s inspiration for the video originated from his passion for filmmaking, as well as the many things he enjoys seeing and doing in the city, “All the places filmed were places [my friends and I] visit often, and the waterfall was Steele Creek Park right behind my grandma’s house”, says Johnny.
With the help of supporters and friends, “Crush Friday” was developed with the intent of showcasing each aspect of Bristol that makes the city special to all who experience it. Video footage revealing unique local spots, distinct sounds and popular area activities entices guests to visit and makes locals fall in love with Bristol all over again.
